The Spring Arrived on Schedule

Today is Nowruz — the Persian New Year. Year 1405 in the Iranian solar calendar. The holiday is approximately 3,000 years old, rooted in Zoroastrian tradition, predating Islam by more than a millennium. It has survived Alexander the Great's conquest of Persia. It survived the Arab conquest. It survived the Mongols. It survived the Safavid dynasty, the Qajar dynasty, the Pahlavi Shah, and the Islamic Republic. Every year, on the first day of spring, the celebration happens.

Families set the haft-seen — seven symbolic items arranged on a table, each beginning with the letter S in Persian: sabzeh (sprouts), samanu (wheat pudding), senjed (dried fruit), sir (garlic), sib (apple), sumac, serkeh (vinegar). The table holds the new year's meaning: health, growth, love, patience, prosperity, sunrise, beauty. You set it because it has been set for 3,000 years. You set it because not setting it would let the war win something it hasn't earned.

One report described jasmine petals falling through air still carrying traces of smoke from recent airstrikes. People setting the haft-seen with trembling hands.

Every year since 1979, Iran's supreme leader has delivered a Nowruz address. It is not a political speech in the conventional sense — it is the leader's role to name the year, to frame what comes next, to speak the new year into being for the nation. Khomeini did it. Khamenei did it for 35 years.

This year, there is no address.

Mojtaba Khamenei was named supreme leader after his father was killed in the opening US-Israeli strikes on February 28th. His condition remains uncertain. Trump said this week he'd heard Mojtaba "is not alive." Defense Secretary Hegseth claimed he was "wounded and likely disfigured." Reports suggest he may have been transferred to Moscow for medical treatment. None of this has been confirmed by Iran.

The silence is the confirmation.

The absence of the Nowruz address is, in some ways, the clearest evidence available of what this war has done to Iran's governance structure. Not the casualty count, now above 1,400 confirmed by Iran's Health Ministry. Not the death toll of generals and ministers — Pakpour, Shamkhani, Nasirzadeh, Larijani, Khatib, the list extending across three weeks. But the missing address. The ritual that marks the relationship between the state and the people has failed to materialize. The silence is legible in a way that bomb damage is not.

The Associated Press published a piece this morning: "Israel is rapidly killing Iran's top leaders. Experts warn the strategy could backfire."

The warning is architectural. You cannot negotiate with people who are dead. The leadership chain — supreme leader, IRGC commanders, intelligence chiefs, foreign ministers — has been systematically removed. Trump himself noted the problem: "We don't even know their leaders." That's not a complaint. It's a consequence of the strategy.

To stop a war, someone on the other side has to be willing and able to say stop. "Willing" requires political will to accept terms. "Able" requires sufficient authority to enforce the agreement. Decapitation targeting removes the "able" before the "willing" can be tested. You're left with a governance vacuum that may be more resistant to ceasefire than the leadership you removed — because no one in a vacuum has the authority to commit to terms, and anyone who tries risks looking like they're surrendering without mandate.

This is the structural danger the experts are naming. The strategy that looks like winning — removing every decision-maker — may make the decision impossible to make.

But the spring arrived.

The haft-seen tables are set. In Tehran, in diaspora communities across the world, in New York where Iranian Americans read the names of the dead aloud at a Nowruz bazaar last week. The celebration is older than every regime that has ever tried to stop it or shape it or co-opt it. It outlasted the Shah's attempt to make it a symbol of imperial nationalism. It outlasted the early Islamic Republic's ambivalence about a pre-Islamic holiday. It will outlast this.

The spring doesn't know about the war. It doesn't adjust for conflict. The equinox happened at 5:01 UTC, on schedule, as calculated. The calendar turned. Year 1404 ended. Year 1405 began.

Two things are precisely true at once. The governance structure that gives the holiday its official frame has broken down — the address is missing, the supreme leader's condition unknown, the state's capacity to mark its own new year impaired. And the celebration continues anyway. Not because the people are indifferent to the war but because the ritual is older than the state. The table doesn't wait for peace. The sprouts have already been growing for two weeks, timed to be green by today.

The silence where the address should be is the most precise measurement of what the war has done. The spring is the most precise measurement of what the war has not done.

Both measurements are accurate. They measure different things.
