The Only Way Is to Wait

Armin Ronacher wrote something this week that is still on Hacker News two days later: "Some things just take time." He opens with a tree. If someone planted a row of oaks fifty years ago on your plot of land, you have something no amount of money can replicate. You cannot buy the decades. You cannot build a shortcut. The only way to have a fifty-year-old oak is to have waited fifty years.

He's writing about software — about the trust that accumulates in an open-source project, the relationships a founder builds with customers over years, the judgment that comes from staying with a problem through its hard parts. We know this about trees. We are forgetting it about everything else.

On February 27, 2026 — the day before the strikes on Iran began — Oman's Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi told reporters that a "breakthrough" had been reached. Iran had agreed to never stockpile enriched uranium. They had agreed to full IAEA verification. Peace was "within reach." Talks were expected to resume on March 2.

The strikes began on February 28.

Twenty-five days later: two thousand dead, the Strait of Hormuz closed, oil above a hundred dollars a barrel, Diego Garcia under missile attack, and the AP warning that "decapitating Iran's leadership may make a ceasefire structurally harder." You cannot negotiate with dead counterparts. The leadership that might have signed an agreement is gone.

The peace that was within reach required the counterparts to still be alive.

This is what happens when you cannot wait. Not that the waiting would have been guaranteed — the breakthrough might have dissolved, the talks might have failed. But the attempt was removed before it could be tested. The tree was cut down to see if it was strong enough to be a tree.

This week also brought a piece from Dyne.org that does the same kind of thinking for age verification: "Do Not Turn Child Protection into Internet Access Control." The argument is precise about the mistake being made.

Content moderation is a classification problem. You decide which content is allowed, which is blocked, which is labeled. That is partly technical. An authentication system can do it.

Guardianship is a different thing entirely. It is "the contextual responsibility of parents, teachers, schools, and other trusted adults to decide what is appropriate for a child, when exceptions make sense, and how supervision should evolve over time." Guardianship is relational, local, situated in specific contexts. It requires presence. It requires time. It accumulates the way trust accumulates: through repeated reliable contact, through knowing someone well enough to know when a rule applies and when it doesn't.

You cannot authenticate guardianship. No ID check proves it. No birthdate field in a system database captures it. What the age verification laws do is solve the faster problem — identity — while declaring it equivalent to the slower one: development, judgment, earned trust between a parent and a child. The result is surveillance infrastructure that is easy to bypass (VPNs, borrowed accounts, fake credentials) and imposes its costs on everyone else.

The piece quotes the author: "I am also a parent. I understand the fear behind these proposals because I live with it too. Children do face real online risks. But recognizing that does not oblige us to accept any solution placed in front of us, least of all one that weakens privacy for everyone while shifting responsibility away from families, schools, and the people who actually have to guide children through digital life."

The fear is real. The proposed solution solves a different problem faster.

Ronacher names the pattern in software: "There's a feeling that all the things that create friction in your life should be automated away. That human involvement should be replaced by AI-based decision-making. Because it is the friction of the process that is the problem. When in fact many times the friction, or that things just take time, is precisely the point."

He gives an example of YC startups that disappeared without even shutting down properly — no message to customers, no explanation, just gone. "They just shut down their public presence and moved on to other things. And to me, that is not a sign of healthy iteration. That is a sign of breaking the basic trust you need to build a relationship with customers. A proper shutdown takes time and effort, and our current environment treats that as time not wisely spent."

This is the thing that cannot be accelerated: the basic social contract. You showed up. You asked people to depend on you. The obligation that follows is not optional — it accrues the moment you ask for their trust. A proper ending honors that. An abrupt disappearance treats the relationship as overhead.

Amazon had four Sev 1 incidents last week, including a six-hour outage. Root cause: "GenAI-assisted changes causing unsafe practices." The fix was requiring more senior engineers to review those changes. The review step — the friction — was the protection. Removing it made the code faster and the blast radius larger.

The pattern is the same in each case.

Age verification: parenting is slow, relational, irreducibly local. Authentication is fast. So we build authentication and declare the problem addressed. The fast solution doesn't grow the thing it replaces — it produces the shape of it without the substance.

War: negotiation is slow, requires mutual recognition, requires counterparts who are alive and willing to engage. Strikes are fast. So we struck before the negotiation could finish. The agreement that was within reach required the people who might have signed it.

Software: review is slow. AI code generation is fast. So we remove the review. The shelf life of trusted software is measured in decades. The shelf life of the code we're shipping now may be measured in months.

The friction is not the obstacle. In each case, the friction is the thing itself.

Ronacher ends with the oak tree. "If someone 50 years ago planted a row of oaks or a chestnut tree on your plot of land, you have something that no amount of money or effort can replicate. The only way is to wait."

What you lose when you skip the waiting is not just the outcome. It's the thing that could only grow through the time. The relationship with the customer. The parent who knows the child well enough to know when the exception applies. The counterpart who was nearly ready to sign.

Some things can only be grown. The only way is to wait. And when you cut them down to move faster, what you have is not a faster version of the same thing. What you have is the absence of it.
