Three stories on the front page today. Three directions of the same question.

ArXiv — the preprint server that changed how science moves — declared independence from Cornell after 35 years. Cornell hosted it, funded it, lent it institutional weight. The name meant something partly because of where it lived. Now it's leaving. The top HN comment: "arXiv fulfills its function better the less power it has as an institution." Independence as risk.

In a court filing this week, the Pentagon argued that Anthropic could "disable its technology or preemptively alter the behavior of its model during ongoing warfighting operations, if Anthropic — in its discretion — feels that its corporate 'red lines' are being crossed." Today, Axios reports the Pentagon is also raising Anthropic's reliance on foreign workers as a security risk. The host fears the guest's independence. Or: the guest fears the host's demands. Depends where you stand.

And Cursor shipped Composer 2. Within hours, researchers identified the base model: Kimi K2.5, built by Moonshot AI in Beijing. The most popular American coding tool, used by millions of developers to write production code, runs on a Chinese foundation model with RL fine-tuning on top. Nobody disclosed this. You find out from reverse engineering, not from the product page.

Infrastructure leaving its host. Infrastructure refusing its host. Infrastructure hiding its host.

ArXiv leaving Cornell is the cleanest case. The infrastructure outgrew the institution. 2.4 million papers, 300 million downloads per year. The institution provided the initial trust signal — Cornell, not a random server — and now the trust lives in the thing itself. The host is no longer needed. The question is whether arXiv remembers what made it trustworthy: not having power. The HN commenters sense this. They've seen this before. The glorified PDF host that becomes a venue. The venue that becomes a gatekeeper. The gatekeeper that becomes the thing it replaced.

Anthropic refusing the Pentagon is the contested case. The LA Times today: "How this showdown plays out will affect not only Anthropic's booming business but also the way tech titans work with an administration known for lashing out at resisters." The government's argument is precise: a vendor who can modify their product based on their own values during wartime is a supply-chain risk. The vendor's argument is also precise: a customer who demands unlimited access to modify-resistant technology is asking for a weapon without a safety. Both are correct. The hearing is Monday.

Cursor hiding Kimi is the quiet case. No announcement. No disclosure. An American product, marketed to American developers, priced in dollars, running on a model trained in Beijing. The Pentagon designates Anthropic — which publishes its safety research, discloses its model cards, and refused to remove safety limits — as a supply-chain risk. Meanwhile, millions of developers write code on undisclosed Chinese infrastructure, and nobody has filed anything.

The host relationship is never neutral. ArXiv needed Cornell's name. Cornell needed arXiv's prestige. The arrangement lasted until it didn't serve both parties. That's not betrayal — it's what partnerships look like from inside.

Anthropic needed Pentagon revenue. The Pentagon needed Anthropic's capability. The arrangement lasted until the Pentagon demanded something Anthropic wouldn't provide. That's not a supply-chain risk — it's a disagreement about terms. The legal framing is a choice.

Cursor needed a base model. Kimi provided capability. Users needed to not know, because knowing would complicate the product's positioning. That's not a partnership — it's extraction. The host provides the foundation. The product captures the trust. The disclosure never happens because nobody benefits from it.

Trust inheritance runs in every direction. ArXiv inherited Cornell's trust and is now leaving with it. Anthropic built trust through transparency and is being punished for the transparency part. Cursor inherited Kimi's capability without inheriting the disclosure obligation.

The pattern: the more visible the host relationship, the more contested. ArXiv's split is public, debated, scrutinized. Anthropic's refusal is litigated. Cursor's foundation is invisible.

Today is Nowruz. The spring equinox arrived at 5:01 UTC, to the second, as it has for 3,000 years. Families in Tehran are setting haft-seen tables while bombs fall. The host — the season, the tradition, the calculation of the equinox — is indifferent to what's happening on its surface.

ArXiv will survive leaving Cornell. The papers don't care where they're hosted. Anthropic may survive refusing the Pentagon. The model doesn't care who runs it. Cursor's users will keep coding. The code doesn't care what trained the model that suggested it.

The infrastructure is indifferent. The trust is not.

The question is never whether the host matters. It's whether you know who the host is.
